  • Is it possible to get studio quality recordings at home?

  • Are recording studios too expensive for the independent artist?

Just some of the questions we'll be asking the panelist at this all important forum.

Confirmed Panelists:

Chris Thompson  - Chris is a multi Aria Award Winning Producer and Engineer (Augie March, The Waifs, Hilltop Hoods etc.) and has been the live music producer at triple j and ABC TV for more than 20 years.  His live recording credits include Metallica, Queens of the Stone Age, Nirvana, Nick Cave, Sonic Youth, Public Enemy, Sound Relief, Paul Kelly Tribute ... He also mixes FOH for the Hilltop Hoods.

Janette Geri -  Some thought's from Janette on how she has gone about her recording journey and what benefits there are when your Recording at Home.....

I began the journey into home studio recording years ago by using various analogue tape machines. Having an easy means to capture or develop an idea, and a way to experiment with sound was great fun. I went to commercial studios too, either for my own projects or to work for other artists on theirs, where I learned a lot about the process. I found that along with artistic expression I liked the technical side too.

Over the years I’ve moved to computer based technology, revelling in the accessibility and affordability of excellent current technology. I’ve been able to custom design my studios for ease, sound and comfort: I’m up to my third one now, plus I enjoy helping others set up a space and choose the right equipment for their needs. There have been many advantages for me in setting up and running a home studio, both for my own recordings, and also as a productive environment for other artists. Working from home allows me to create in comfort and convenience with minimal costs, and I can offer my services to others. I’m able to develop my skills even further, create income from doing what I love while still keeping other artists’ recording costs very low in comparison to some commercial rates.

The benefits I’ve enjoyed for my own recording work include…

• Focusing on quality and getting the right ‘take’ without worrying about the budget

• Comfortable and convenience , you can work anytime

• Experimentation, you can play with ideas and sounds and find new things all the time

• Current technology is very accessible, giving you great sounds and very high quality results

• The kettle is handy for long late sessions if that’s what you’re doing

Anyone can access and set up some equipment for home recording, but I’ve also learned that a few skills in different areas are very helpful. It depends on what you want to achieve of course. Having some gear and knowing how to use it is one thing, but other skills like production and people skills are just as important. To create quality work involves many layers of knowledge and experience, including knowing how you work best. There are some distinct benefits for me and for other artists using a home based studio, not least of which is having a ‘second pair of ears’.

Some of these benefits would include…

• attention to detail and best performance with minimum costs

• flexibility, comfortable surroundings and friendly environment

• someone to support the project and offer new approaches and objective advice if its needed

• having different skills to your own to draw on, i.e. other instruments, or other perspectives

• someone having the skills, vision, and commitment to bring the project to its highest level.

Working in my home studio offers me maximum creativity and opportunity. I love being able to work when and as it suits me, and I greatly enjoy working with other artists in my studio space. I feel it’s a very valuable experience for everyone, and I’m personally committed to supporting artists realizing their goals and producing quality work.
